PTFE is a unique polymer recognized for its exceptional material properties, which provide it with a significant advantage over other materials in numerous applications. Lenzing PROFILEN® PTFE products, for example, consist of 100 percent PTFE, ensuring permanent chemical and physical properties that remain intact throughout the product's entire lifetime, unlike coated alternatives. These superior qualities make PTFE particularly effective in demanding fields such as technical specialty textiles and as a surgical suture material.

PTFE is unique among polymers. Processed into fibers or yarns, it offers a range of exceptional material properties, giving it a commanding lead over other materials in countless areas of application. It is particularly unbeatable in technical specialty textiles and as a surgical suture material.
Lenzing PROFILEN® products consist of 100 percent PTFE (unless otherwise indicated, as in the case of colored products that also contain color pigments). Their chemical and physical material properties are permanent, unlike coated products. They remain intact over the entire lifetime of the product.

What technologies does Lenzing Plastics use for PTFE processing?
For the processing of the fluoropolymer PTFE, we use self-developed technologies, which we have refined over many years, such as pressing, sintering and stretching, as well as extrusion. Our versatile products, including films, tapes, yarns, filaments and fibers, are manufactured according to customer requirements with various finishing and winding technologies.
The material properties of PTFE
Chemically inert / highly biocompatible
Due to the strong bond between the carbon and the fluorine atoms, PTFE is virtually chemically inert. This makes it the perfect starting material for many filtration and sealing applications. For applications in contact with the human body, this means maximum biocompatibility and freedom from reaction.
Extremely low coefficient of friction
The friction of PTFE is similar to that between two blocks of ice. Its static friction is equivalent to dynamic friction, which makes the start of movement jerk-free.
Enormous temperature resistance
PTFE proves itself at continuous service temperatures from -200 °C to +260 °C. In extremely cold environments, it remains flexible and does not become brittle. It neither decomposes nor degrades at high temperatures.
Totally repellent and anti-adhesive
Virtually nothing can adhere to PTFE. Lenzing PROFILEN® products are also hydrophobic and oleophobic – a material property that impedes bacterial growth and contamination.
Non-flammable
PTFE has a “Limiting Oxygen Index” LOI of 95%, making it considered non-combustible. If PTFE is exposed to direct flame, it will disintegrate incandescently.
UV and weather resistant
PTFE is 100% UV stable, does not rot, and is resistant to microorganisms and pests.
Physiologically safe
Yarns and fibers made of 100% fully sintered PTFE are ideally suited for food, drinking water and medical applications.
Perfect insulator
PTFE is a perfect electrical and thermal insulator.
Infinite lifetime
PTFE is indestructible in many applications – this allows very long product life cycles.
