Friction Management

Multifilaments and spun yarns to minimize friction

Tomorrow’s solutions! With one click.

Lenzing PROFILEN® PTFE yarns for friction minimization

Smooth as ice: for perfect friction management

PTFE has one of the lowest coefficients of friction of all solid materials. “Smooth as ice” is not just a slogan, but a comparison very close to reality. In fact, the coefficient of friction of PTFE is equivalent to that of two blocks of ice rubbed together. This advantageous property is not only exploited in PTFE solids, but also in textile applications. For many years, Lenzing Plastics has been supplying solutions for minimizing friction – and in a wide variety of areas.

Application examples: PTFE yarns for friction minimization.

Our PTFE yarns are available as 100% pure PTFE multifilaments as well as spun yarns. They are used in various tribological areas, for example in the manufacture of ropes, plain bearings, drive belts and conveyor belts. Multifilaments are also ideal for functional textiles, protective clothing and medical products such as wound dressings. The combination of low friction and excellent durability has proven to be a unique advantage here.

Product variants: pure PTFE or combinations

Lenzing PROFILEN® PTFE multifilaments

Our yarn consists of 100% pure PTFE and thus has all the exceptional properties of this high-performance material. In order to enable the widest possible range of applications, the yarn is produced in different finenesses. In addition, we have succeeded in using the PTFE yarn for knitting, weaving or braiding, which means that a wide variety of products can be manufactured. It is also possible to combine it with other yarns to guarantee an optimum balance between minimizing friction and high strength or low abrasion. We would be happy to advise you on how to optimize your products and processes as well.

Lenzing PROFILEN® PTFE spun yarn and polyester

In friction management, PTFE is often combined with polyester. We have taken this as an opportunity and, together with a partner company, developed a spun yarn that achieves optimum distribution and embedding of PTFE and polyester. This yarn is already being used successfully, especially in plain bearings, but also in fabrics for belts. There is a wide range of possible applications – we will be pleased to find a solution for your challenge as well.

Lenzing research and development

When it comes to technical textiles, Lenzing Plastics has been doing pioneering work for many years. More than two decades ago we started to conduct first tests with the polymer PTFE. PROFILEN® yarns and fibers were developed shortly thereafter. Through continuous research – especially in the area of friction minimization – we are able to continuously develop our products and open up new fields of application.

The possibilities to use PTFE for friction minimization are huge. Contact us if you would like to optimize your technical textile - whether externally or within the design. We will be very happy to share our know-how with you!
