Our Environmental Policy – Our Raw Material

At Lenzing Plastics we are fully aware of our responsibility and take sustainable measures in our field: 

  • Economical use of raw materials and resources and also the avoidance of waste products or its full reintegration into the raw material cycle are of utmost importance to us. For example, we re-granulate the waste in the film extrusion inline and lead it back into the process.

  • We are continually working on the improvement of our energy efficiency and also on the environmental compatibility of our products and processes: For example our regenerative post-combustion units lead to a significant reduction of our gas consumption.

  • We act environmentally friendly, economically and socially minded. As, from our point of view, only the simultaneous implementation of all these three aspects guarantee sustainable development.

Our modern world today would be unimaginable without plastics. Plastic has unique characteristics: These predominantly influence a variety of products in daily life or protect these products in the form of packaging.

  • Plastics can be produced from a variety of natural raw materials, ranging from cellulose, coal and gas, right up to crude oil, cereals and corn.

          -Plastics are therefore a natural material which is industrially processed.

  • Only 4-6% of the fossil fuels oil and gas are required for the production of plastics.

          -the major part of these fossil resources are used in transport (45%) and in generating electrical power
           and heating (42%).

  • Plastic is an extremely resource-friendly material- not only during production but above all, also during its use.

          -in certain applications, for example, in insulating and heat-proofing materials, plastics save, in the course
           of its service life, up to 140 times the amount of energy required to produce it.

  • In addition, the carbon footprint for plastics in production and transport is clearly better than for other materials.

          -For example, glass melts at 1000°C which makes it an “energy guzzler”.

         -Glass also weighs more and takes up more volume which results in a higher fuel consumption in 
          transport. The same applies to aluminium, wood etc.

Plastics are recyclable and reusable. This makes plastics economically efficient.

  • Europe has a functioning disposal- and recycling system. The consumer takes an active part in the recycling- and disposal loop.

    -In German-speaking areas, for example, more than 80% of plastics are recycled.

  • Most of today’s consumers are not aware of the fact that many plastic products of daily life are made out of recycled material.

The plastics industry in Europe provides 2.2 million jobs. In this way  at Lenzing Plastics, based in Austria, we contribute toward the economic- and social wealth.

We save energy

20% of the annual production volume of plastics produced in Europe is used in the building industry.

  • A large portion of which is used in the insulation of buildings. For a standard family house it can be said that the total energy required to produce the insulation material is already saved in one year.

  • In addition, pipework, window frames and similar are also made out of plastic.

We protect products

Strong and robust but at the same time flexible, light, impermeable and easy to sterilize: Plastics possess all these attributes.

  • This is why plastics is ideal for all kinds of packaging.

  • Plastics prolongs the shelf life of products (e.g., for foodstuffs) and protects against damage (for example, in electronic equipment).

  • Although more than 50% of goods in Europe are packaged in plastics, this however only amounts to 17% of the total weight of packaging. Plastics therefore reduces transport costs.

We save lives

Special plastic materials save lives: whether as artificial heart valves, other implants or surgical suture material – PTFE is e.g. an extremely biocompatible material in this field of medical products in order to reduce risk of allergic reactions for patients.

  • Lenzing Plastics supplies 100% pure PTFE yarns, which are produced  according to ISO 13485 for medical applications.

We reduce CO2 in mobility

A car emits 20kg less CO2 during its service life for every kilo attained in weight reduction.

  • This is why plastics are used: The same car part can weigh up to 80% less if made out of plastic.
