Unlike the new monofil multi-yarns, fibrillated yarns are made out of one wide tape. After the process of monoaxially stretching, it is slit to a honeycomb-like structure. This imitates the aspect of blades of grass, while remaining a single yarn – making it a cheap and easy to tuft raw material:

During the use of the surface, the thin bridges of the fibrillation tear apart. Over time the artificial turf fades to a carpet of thin capillaries. Some maintenance machines that brush the turf, even accelerate this process. Only the part of the yarn, that is covered by the infill remains in good order:

In the end, the artificial turf becomes an exhausted surface covered with felted hairs of synthetic yarn. Playing characteristics, resilience and the visual impression of the turf get very poor:

Monofil yarns are the solution
We at Lenzing Plastics believe that monofil yarns will be the future pile material for artificial turf. Monofil yarns guarantee a more natural look, better playing characteristics, no more post-fibrillation and the chance for further yarn diversifications.
Fibrillated yarns still have more than 70% market share, but the artificial turf market is ready for change. Monofil yarns are technically more sophisticated and sometimes more difficult to produce. But Lenzing Plastics is accepting this challenge and proud of being able to supply You with these new yarn types.
